July Resident of the Month: Rutha Powell

Rutha Powell has been a pillar of the King Park area community for almost 50 years. Having just turned 84 on July 3rd, it is appropriate she is our July Resident of the Month. Rutha has lived in Fall Creek Place since 1970. She is the mother of 6 boys and 2 girls and the grandmother to 17 grandchildren.

In 1981 along with Dorothy Burris and Rod Bohannon, Rutha established CNC (Citizens Neighborhood Council) which brought together all the neighborhoods in the King Park area. She was a fierce advocate for community development and bringing together neighbors through the first community development organization the area had ever seen. She helped form the first board for CNC which consisted of eight original members.

Rutha loves the quiet, peacefulness the neighborhood provides along with sitting out on her expansive porch. She remembers the days when it was not so peaceful with gun shots being fired throughout the area on any given day. She loves being close to her church, Greater Morning Star Baptist Church, which she can walk to from her home. She’s been a part of the church growth, seeing to fruition a child care center and preparatory school.

Rutha was a proud recipient of King Park Development Corp’s Home Owner Repair program in 2016 when she received a new roof. The repair program is another neighborhood need she was a strong advocate for back when the program began and now pleased for the repairs needed for her own home.

After being a tireless advocate for the community, Rutha still would like to see things happen for the neighborhood. She misses the neighborhood cohesion and wants to see more neighbors coming together again more often.

Don’t forget to nominate residents for upcoming months! Know someone special in King Park that you’d like to nominate? Let us know!
