Meet the Renew Leadership: Steven

The people behind Renew Indianapolis are what make our organization amazing. Each person contributes their skills and talents to improve housing, economic development, and quality of life in the metropolitan Indianapolis area.

We got a chance to chat with Steven Meyer, our Chief Executive Officer about his work at Renew as well as the lessons and values that drive him. Learn a little more about Steven below.

What does your typical workday look like?

My typical day is focused on supporting staff as they keep projects moving forward and making decisions about what is next. Mostly it is meetings and emails and spreadsheets!

What is your proudest moment at Renew Indianapolis?

While we have had a lot of accomplishments over the years, I am most proud of the impressive staff, dedicated Board members, and knowledgeable committee members who generously give of themselves to fulfill our mission.

What are your hopes for the industry?

At its core, community development exists to address the effects of poverty and inequality, so my hope is that one day the industry is no longer needed.

What are the values that drive you?

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. once said that he liked and respected the Good Samaritan but that he would rather fix the Jericho Road.

“I don’t want to pick up anyone else, along this Jericho Road; I want to fix the Jericho Road. I want to pave the Jericho Road, add street lights to the Jericho Road; make the Jericho Road safe (for passage) by everybody.”

– Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

What’s the most important lesson you’ve learned?

“We have to continually be jumping off cliffs and developing our wings on the way down.”

– Kurt Vonnegut
